Over the years Sacred Heart students have enjoyed individual and team success on the courts and various playing fields. Participation in athletics is an important aspect to the lives of many on King Street, and it does not necessarily have to end here.
| Certainly most colleges offer extensive intramural sports programs for their students. At this level students compete against other students on campus in sports ranging from the traditional basketball and volleyball to the more unique demands of ultimate frisbee and inner tube water polo. The competition in intramurals ranges from beginner to advanced, but regardless of the demands, intramural sports remain open to all members of the campus community. |

When Sacred Heart students become curious about the prospects of competing on the Division level in college, that is when the admission process can become confusing. Keep in mind that academics are the primary reason for attending a particular school. Given this priority, consider the following tips as you evaluate the fit of various sports programs to your needs and talents:
- Collegiate sports are tremendous time commitments. Ask what would be expected of you (pre-season, season and post-season) and how the college supports its athletes with regard to course responsibilities.
- Attend summer camps and take part in tournaments for your sport. You will be competing against other strong players, improving your skills and meeting college coaches in the process.
- Consult with members of the Sacred Heart Athletic Department. They may be able help you identify college athletic programs that meet your needs, and they will likely call or write the college coaches on your behalf.
- In your athletic search review the other aspects of the college. That way you can request information from college coaches as a knowledgeable and serious prospective candidate.
- Create a sports resume that you can send to college coaches. Also, put together a short video or DVD highlighting your skills and performances in actual games. Make sure your information is properly documented on any videos you send to coaches, and follow-up your with another contact.
- By the end of junior year register with the NCAA Clearinghouse http://eligibilitycenter.org for eligibility if you want to try to play at a Division I or II school.

Participation in collegiate athletics can be incredibly rewarding. It is a wonderful means of expression, a release of stress and a way of feeling like you are part of the community.
Unfortunately, the recruitment of athletes can be misleading. Beware of promises made by college coaches. You can be assured that you are not the only recruit being promised a spot on the team, playing time or admission to the school. The amount of influence a coach may have on the admission process varies by sport at each school. Maintain your priorities and perspective, and you can avoid some of the disappointment.
