NAIS Selects Barat Foundation for Conference

10/13/2005

The National Association of Independent Schools has selected the Barat Foundation, the student-run philanthropic organization, to present a workshop at its annual conference in Boston in March 2006.

The title of the presentation is “Philanthropy in Action – Young Women Establish and Run a Foundation.”

Lawrence Lunt, a parent and member of the Board of Trustees, helped the School establish the foundation.  He was looking for a way to incorporate education, philanthropy and ethics into the mission of an expedition he led to the North Pole in 2003.  His expedition was in the planning stages when Sacred Heart was forming a student-run foundation.  Mr. Lunt used his expedition as a means to raise funds for the foundation.  The money was put into an endowment, the interest from which was used this year, for the first time, to fund non-profit organizations that benefit children.

Gail Casey, the Upper School academic dean, and Michael Chung, director of campus ministry, submitted the workshop proposal to NAIS.   In informing the School about the acceptance of its proposal, NAIS said, “We are excited about all of the high quality proposals we have received, but it has made the decision-making process a challenging one.”

Several students will accompany Mrs. Casey and Mr. Chung to Boston for the workshop.

The theme of this year’s NAIS conference is “Opening the Door to the Global Schoolhouse.”  Sacred Heart, as part of an international network of Sacred Heart schools, is delighted to be invited to share this wonderful program with the many schools that will be attending the conference.
